8 Cities, 8 Styles
I was at Clothes Show London this June and of course it didn’t fail to inspire me. The models floated down the catwalk with ease and the model dancers performed the hearts out. This year’s theme was the different styles found in some of the world’s most fashionable cities. Every country/city has its own individual style, based on the climate/weather they live in and their culture/religion/beliefs. But one thing that fashion shows, magazines and blogs have allowed us to do is explore the style in places different to where we live, giving us the confidence to try it out in our own unique way. And although people say the world is still very divided, I think fashion is fast pulling us together.
Tokyo
Stylist Alexis Knox drew inspiration for the catwalk from films such as Memoirs of a Geisha and Kill Bill – where kimono’s were very popular. One thing I noticed from the style here was that they like to use a variety of fabrics, textures and patterns and do not shy away from expressing themselves. Colour and layering is very much welcomed in Toyko – think Harajuku girl.
New York – Bronx
Style in the Bronx was very sporty back in the 80′s – think Run DMC. The models on the catwalk were in hoodies and tracksuit bottoms with high tops – Not Sport Luxe, just sport; and the most popular colours to wear were red, blue, black or white. The style in the Bronx has grown up slightly now, however they still project a raw edge that let’s anyone and everyone know not to mess with them.
New York – Manhattan
Thanks to Gossip Girl, everyone wants to look like they are from Manhattan. Is it Blake’s headbands and socks with heels that does it or Serena’s high waisted skirts and oversized clutches? Who knows… all we do know is we want to look that chic, everyday! The men and women of Manhattan are the epitome of sophistication and they never let that reputation escape them.
Rome – La Dolce Vita
Meaning ‘The Sweet Life’ – this style is chic, sexy and romantic all at once. And of course with Rome being one of the capitals of romance, this comes so naturally to the people of Italy. Men were in shirts with ties and women wore body conscious dresses with splits down the side. Nowadays, Italians still ooze an abundance of confidence which is projected in the way they dress.
Paris – Le Jardin Des Tuileries
The style in Paris is classic meets trendy – think Chanel and power shoulders. Those Parisians certainly know how to keep ahead of the fashion stakes and will be the first to don their fur coats in winter and Mac’s in autumn. They stick to simple colours such as black, white, grey, peach, brown and beige.
Paris – Moulin Rouge
Probably one of the most popular films in history! The style here was very easy to understand and those who looked like a member of the Pussycat Dolls were sexy and knew how to use their sex appeal to get what they wanted. Think red, black, lace, corsets, lipstick, fishnet tights, feather boa’s and very high heels.
London – Carnaby Street
This style is very British and proud. Red buses going past and The Beetles playing in the background is what sets the mood for this style. Girls are not without their wayfarers, slouch beanie hats and crop tops and guys are rocking their skinny jeans and Dr Martens to the max. Much like Paris, Londoners know how to keep ahead of the fashion game, and Carnaby St. is where to go to fulfil your fashion desires.
London – Shoreditch
This style is quite retro – think Oasis and cockney accents. Brogues, parka jackets, duffle coats and bowler hats live here. This style has an old edge feel to it, mixing vintage finds with current high street and designer fashion.
