Crazy about GaGa? Get The Look

Introducing Lady GaGa, the one woman who is filling our screens and blasting out of our radios more than ever this semester. But what makes her stand out of the fashion and music scene as an icon, more so than any other female solo artist? Is it her eccentric fashion style, or her diverse song lyrics combined with creative choreography in her breath taking music videos? Truth is, its all of these; her recent singles ‘Telephone’ and ‘Bad Romance’ from the album ‘The Fame Monster’ have combined music, fashion, art, politics and creative choreography all into one. This isn’t just another female solo musician. This is the work of an artist whose influence is grasping us by the arm; leading us into a new era of power dressing, music and expressionism.

‘It’s all about everything altogether: performance, art, pop, fashion. I want the imagery to be so strong that fans will want to eat and taste and lick every part of us’
Lady GaGa.

‘I think my music and my performance art offers a sense of escapism, especially in America. There was a real need for someone to tell a story’. Her latest release, ‘Alejandro’ does just this; it tells us a story of Italian politics, freedom, love and expressionism, and may be one of her most influential songs as of yet, the supporting video taking music performance to a whole new level. So what is it that makes her music videos so memorable? Here at FashionBeans, and for all you fashion lovers out there too, the answer is obvious – the clothes.

Take the first scene, ‘funeral of her broken heart’; GaGa wears an exaggerated hourglass silhouette ivory dress with black lace, which is possibly an extension from Alexander McQueen’s spring 2007 collection entitled, ‘Sarabonde’. She also styles a Philip Treacy headdress (for McQueen) that features black flowers trapped in lace; a fashion piece that is now associated with GaGa’s ever expanding fashion wardrobe.

If you were to take the key features from this particular scene, i.e. the red lip, black lace, and elongated silhouette, you may recognise a popular trend emerging; the statement lip and lace.

Also, in the bed choreography sequence, she chooses to wear knitted nude Calvin Klein underwear from the spring 2006 collection, combined with seam and heel stockings from Agent Provocateur. What does this echo; underwear as outerwear.

Lady Gaga Rocking the Underwear as Outerwear Trend

It is the way in which she approaches fashion for performance that perhaps tackles the fear of female expressionism in the music industry, that so many other female solo artists have been afraid to do, to push the boundaries. Each piece she wears and creates conveys a meaning; an expression of the times, and in one way or another has inspiration taken from the latest trends and catwalk collections. What she is saying is that ‘bands shouldn’t look like roadies, they should look amazing and be as inspiring as their music’. She is shouting out to us that we have the freedom to express ourselves through what we wear, through what we listen too and what we do. Which ultimately, is what fashion is all about.

Therefore, here at FashionBeans we can show you how easy it is to take inspiration from an icon such as Lady GaGa, and take key pieces from each summer trend to express yourself and your own individual fashion style.
